About

Metro Center Voice amplifies the voices of the businesses at the heart of downtown Springfield, so the people who work here have a say in the decisions that shape downtown’s future.

The shops, restaurants, firms, and employers of Metro Center have worked hard, and worked together, to build the commercial and civic core of Springfield. Many are rooted here across generations. They see what this district can still become: a catalyst for growth, new jobs, and new housing.

Yet too often, decisions about downtown are made without them. Recent choices about the district’s future have made the pattern plain. Those closest to downtown said their feedback was set aside, and voices across the city objected that decisions this consequential had been made, in the words of one local leader, “by people outside of our community,” with too little public input. Many of the questions raised about how those decisions were reached still await answers.

For Metro Center, the stakes run in both directions. A major civic anchor, done right, can give downtown a generational boost. It can draw investment, foot traffic, and momentum into the core, and give the people who serve there a safe, modern place to work. Done without downtown’s businesses at the table, it risks draining the offices, economy, and street life that give Metro Center its vitality, hollowing out the very district it was meant to strengthen.

Decisions of this magnitude owe the public a process that is fair, lawful, and open, with a level playing field for everyone who seeks to shape Springfield’s future. Taxpayers, workers, and residents deserve confidence in how these choices are made, not only in what gets built.

The businesses that have invested this much in Metro Center deserve a voice in what comes next. Metro Center Voice tells their stories, including their successes in their own words. It carries their hopes for downtown, and their concerns when its future is at stake, to the people who decide it. Our commitment to that work, and to Springfield, is unwavering.
