General Manager, Tower Square

A Fully Occupied Building: How Tower Square Brought Downtown Back to Life

When Sara Smith talks about what makes Tower Square work, her answer is refreshingly simple: a fully occupied building. As general manager, she has watched the property come a long way — now more than 90% occupied — a turnaround she describes as bringing this corner of downtown back to life.

The key, she says, is the right mix of tenants. Bulkley Richardson, the district attorney’s offices, financial institutions, and retail tenants like the neighborhood wine shop all come together to create a thriving property — and a true downtown hub. Tower Square’s central location lets people walk over from nearby offices, step into the retail mall, and find nearly everything they need without leaving the building.

That vibrancy is exactly what Smith wants to protect. A walkable Metro Center — where people move on foot between the courthouse, their offices, and the shops in between — is what keeps downtown full, and what keeps its lights on.
